William Doyle Ruckelshaus is best known as the last survivor of the so-called Saturday Night Massacre, the historic day in 1973 when he walked off the job at the Justice Department rather than carry out an order from the president. Ruckelshaus is a longtime public servant who built America’s Environmental Protection Agency, took on the automakers and banned DDT, the toxic pesticide.
