Patty Murray
FIRST U.S. SENATOR 1993-PRESENT
In the 1980s, Murray organized 13,000 parents to save a Washington preschool program from budget cuts.
With famous sneakers and plain talk, Murray clinched a U.S. Senate seat in 1992, the landmark “Year of the Woman.”
The U.S. Senator co-authored the sweeping Violence Against Women Act of 1994.
Impassioned by the legacy of her father, a World War II hero, Murray ranks as the first woman to sit on the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee.
"Just a mom in tennis shoes."
